People reflect various amounts of such light and the 'motion' detector actually detects the change in viewed brightness as the person enters/leaves.

Such passive infrared (PIR) detectors are sensitive to: sunlight (basement windows?), flickering flame (pilot light or flame from furnace?), remote control devices which send infrared (TV remote, etc., including reflections of the signal), red LED lights (alarm system status indicator in field of view of motion detector?), things like that.

You can make your PIR detectors less sensitive but much more reliable by "cross wiring" them so that two have to trigger at the same time, then arrange them to view the same room area from right angles to each other.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4450061648126809792.post-81134450817369711052009-08-22T20:23:42.318-07:002009-08-22T20:23:42.318-07:00Patrols do move through the neighborhood. Patrol cars just don't sit in Madison Park waiting for something to happen as they do in other neighborhoods.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4450061648126809792.post-55502288894355824502009-08-17T21:41:42.169-07:002009-08-17T21:41:42.169-07:00The police did have a regular patrol through the n...The police did have a regular patrol through the neighborhood in the past, but they've changed the routine. When the community complained about a perceived uptick in crime this summer, patrols were increased through the area for a couple weeks or so but were then withdrawn. It's a resource issue as I understand it.Bryan Tagashttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04318071838873203382noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4450061648126809792.post-1560992011768466662009-08-17T11:42:28.690-07:002009-08-17T11:42:28.690-07:00Bryan, I "get" the alarm response issue ...Bryan, I "get" the alarm response issue and I expect the immediate 9-1-1 response but don't our tax dollars pay for an occasional drive through the neighborhood by an officer in a car? A police car is a deterrent to crime and it makes the neighbors feel good to know someone is there to help if something goes wrong. I noticed in your crime statistics that burglaries tend to increase in the summer months. That's not from locals, it's from a small portion of people who are going to the beach and are "checking out" open doors, windows, unlocked cars and maybe home alarms that are not being monitored. Will Lomennoreply@blogger.com
