A sad end to a really bad year

I am very sorry to report the death of Madison Park Hardware's Scott McKee, who was reportedly struck down this weekend after a brief battle with cancer. Scott's mother, Lola, has been hospitalized, I understand, but her condition is not thought to be life threatening.

Scott has been a neighborhood mainstay and go-to guy for as long as many Madison Parkers can remember. As the sign in the window says, he will be missed. Our hearts go out to Lola and Scott's sister, Cookie, at this sad time.

UPDATE: The Seattle Times carries Scott's obituary in the December 30 edition, available online here. Scott's family suggests donations in his name to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (530 Dexter Avenue N., Seattle, 98109).

  2. Let's not forget Scott's big sister Jane. She grew up with her brother and sister, running back and forth across the alley between the store and their home. The McKees are a Madison Park institution and our hearts go out to them. We'll see you all on Saturday.

  3. I am very saddened and sad to read about Scott's passing. He was always so kind and friendly and helpful, even for the most minor question and the most small purchase. He was a fine person, and I am all of his Madison Park customers will miss him. My sympathy is with his entire family. Harvey G - Madison Park

  4. As a small update, Lola is now out of the hospital and doing ok.

Life won't be the same without Scott, he's sorely missed. He meant a lot to Madison Park, the store, the family, and I'm going to miss him so much. Everyone is. He was helping customers and working almost up until the end.

Thank you for the post; it proves again why Madison Park is such a wonderful neighborhood, because people care. They know each other. Someone left a lit candle and a white flower by the back door of the store on Monday. We all got choked up. Thank you.

  5. Please also remember to keep Kay McKee in you thoughts and prayers. Scott and Kay were married 6 years ago and she helped Scott through this difficult part of his life. Lola is doing better. Although the Drs want her to take it a little easy. The store will reopen on Monday the 11th as planned. We thank everyone who has expressed their symphony and have offered their help. From the family, thank you all. Kirk McKee (cousin from Arkansas)

  6. We visited Madison Park in September, walked into the back of the hardware store where Scott was working. He saw us and gave us one of his big smiles, an enthusiastic "Hey!", and a big hug, letting us know how glad he was to see us. Little did any of us know at that time that it would be our last visit. We will always remember Scott's special laugh and the sparkle in his eyes. It is so hard to believe that he is really gone but I am so glad the terrible pain is also gone. Thank you so much Kay for all you did for him through the very rapid end of a very special life. We are thinking of you all with much love.
